Horizontal vs Vertical Development: Why Businesses Need Leaders Who See "Around Corners"

Is it just me, or are we facing an increasing number of problems that can't be solved - in our nation, our businesses, and our families.

As Carl Jung said, working through insoluble problems involves growth.

This highlights two very different types of growth - horizontal and vertical development.

learning/improving skills to do the job better

learning how to function with increasing levels of authority in increasingly complex environments.

It highlights:

  • incremental improvement vs. increased maturity and agility.

  • improved interpersonal skills vs. learning to think through broader implications for the team, organization, and stakeholders.

  • a focus on present issues vs. preparing for future uncertainties.

  • moving through issues linearly vs. seeing around corners and anticipating future challenges.

Horizontal development is essential. But in the amazing disruption in every facet of life, the VUCA world (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) is fully upon us.

Vertical development must be added to traditional horizontally focused training offerings.

Coaching is one of the most powerful tools that can bridge this gap.

Talk to an executive or leadership coach about how they can help!
